The magic of the basque country

So, I have just arrived back from my week long hen party in sunny Barcelona - and believe me it was very sunny! We drank cartons of Don Simon red wine (1.5 euros a litre was too hard to resist!). We smoked far too many cigarettes; ate a LOT of tapas and spent far too many hours bathing in the basque country sun. It was delightful to say the least.

A group snap...

On one afternoon, we rambled in to the gothic quarter and there I found the most enchanting shop I have ever entered, 'Llibreria Selvaggio'. Picture this ... decrepit oak shelves barely attached to their hinges, but holding the most beautiful, ancient, musty leather bound books. A man of about 50 with a handsome spanish moustache (better than the ones in east London, trust me, I know!). He sits smoking a vintage cigar and the smell of dried tobacco permeates the air. There are stacks and stacks of vintage postcards, some with hand written notes on the back. I chose one, which my dear friend Caroline kindly translated and it goes like this ...

My darling
I miss you more and more each day and if I had all of the pearls and diamonds in the world, then I would send them your way, but alas I am a poor man, but maybe one day.

Yours forever

B

A snap pf the postcard...

So very sweet, and the postcard dates 1943. Love never grows old. I love that this tiny shop is filled with so many stories. It has so much character and I haven't stopped thinking about it since my visit. A real inspiration. We try to give a similar experience with our clothes. All hand picked and each piece has a story of it's own. I want to visit more shops like the one in Barcelona. Please let me know if you have any recommendations, I'd be delighted to know! xxx

Catchin' up with Frockney Rebel

It's been a long long time since we have posted... We're really sorry,we have been very busy, but now we are back!
So to fill you in on the past 18 months we have made a 'What 's been going down list' here goes...

1. Frockney Rebel opened it's new gorgeous (even if we do say so ourself!) online boutique and you find it at:

www.facebook.com/frockneyrebel

(Me driving the boat)

3. We're getting hitched! So if you ever wondered why the girl in Frockney Rebel never seems to leave her small toy sewing machine, know that she is making wedding bunting & a shed load of it at that!

4. We were given timeout best shops 2012 & 2013 along with some other gorgeous shops (and we even have the stickers to prove it!)

5. We completed all seasons of The Wire, The Sopranos, Dexter and Breaking Bad! ( and are now watching Boardwalk Empire (hence the new obsession of 30's jazz playing all day long in Frockney Rebel - this obsession is here to stay!)

6. We are now selling on instagram ... Gorgeous pieces are updated and if you like and wanna take home, you leave us a little comment and we will reserve it for you. This is a lot of fun and feels like a mini vintage auction! You'll find us @frockneyrebel

7. I still can't drive, but now we have a new Frockney Rebel vehicle, I'm hoping to make it my new year's resolution to drive! (this has been my new year's resolution for 8 years!)

(The Frockneymobile)

8. We have been on amazing buying trips to Berlin and Naples. And recently a Frockney Rebel friend went on a buying trip to America, so be prepared for some seriously hot Californian summer dresses! Frockin and rolling

So last week was a busy one for The Frockneys. We were  all geared up for the new FREE arts and culture event 'Market Club', which was held yesterday at Rich Mix, but don't worry if you missed it cos the next one will be Sunday 30th March. Mum and I were there eating tuna paninis and taking full advantage of the 2 Becks for £5. There was table tennis, fruit bowls made from paper clips and of course we were there with a selection of beautiful vintage pieces. To find out more for next time, follow the link

We had a lovely blogger (http://lionstigersrahhh.blogspot.com/) in Frockney Rebel last week. She flattered us with her kind (but true) words - "All the vintage your heart desires in one creative space in the heart of East London. You will be sure to get yourself a gem or two every time you set foot into Frockney Rebel Vintage. The wonderful Omid & Laura are always there to for style advice or a chat and a cuppa!"

She also takes a beautiful picture.

We also had another fantastic feature on Mary Lous's Eastside Stories blog! http://eastsidestories.wordpress.com/2011/02/18/frockney-rebel-hackneys-new-vintage-oasis/

We found some beautiful pieces this week and amongst the gems we found these rather spectacular specs. Pop in for a photo.

So we're off. The Frockneys are heading over to Shepherds Bush to see Crystal Castles and Warpaint. We heart frock 'n' roll (too far) X

Jewels. More jewels. This is what you guys requested last week in Frockney Rebel. So we are bringing back the rules on jewels. I have spent this week on the rummage and my beady eyes led me to Essex, the homeland. This is where I found the first few of my precious stones. Been taking a few tips from Fagin - Picking a pocket or two, but it seems to have payed off as we have found some beautiful pieces.

Fagin - Master of picking pockets.

So this year is really the year for weddings.

I'm not referring to Big Gypsy Weddings (although they are pretty impresssive) nor am I referring to Kate and Will cos I really couldn't give two hoots whether Kate decides to travel to her wedding by carriage or car. Get on your bike love and do us all a favour. YAWN.  No this year three of my nearest and dearest couples are tieing the knot. I haven't been to a wedding since my binge drinking days. It was the noughties. Summer of 03. Margate was the setting I was sweet sixteen. I wore tight white hipsters, a halter neck top from Jane Norman and drank Smirnoff ice until I pretty much passed out. That was a wedding to remember. I'm hoping that I have somewhat matured since that day in Margate. Three weddings. Three different dresses? We have plenty of beautiful dresses in at the mo, so maybe I could borrow a few from the rails and neatly hang them afterwards? I'll try to not leave any smirnoff stains, but I can't make any promises ; )  The third wedding I will be attending will be held in Bordeaux. Perfect chance to sample some fine wine from the vineyards and I will be going for a french theme when choosing my dress, so will be drawing inspiration from Biddy Bardot herself.

So Banksy's 'Exit Through The Gift shop' has not surprisingly been nominated for an oscar. I'm trying to work out if I can somehow get the man himself to grafitti our shop wall. I mean I could tempt him with many things. I make a mean cup of tea in this little shop. I have laughing cow cheese triangles in abundance. We could sit and watch Big Fat Gypsy Weddings together. Even do The Guardian crossword online (I allow three cheats each) and if none of these things tempt him, I could always treat him to a doner with chilli sauce salad from Troy Kebabs next door. You can read Banksy's 'Exit Through The Gift Shop' interview here.

Don't miss Future Beauty: 30 years of Japanese Fashion at the Barbican. Exhibition closes on 6th Feb, so you haven't got long.  I'm going along next week and if you're 25 and under then join freeB to buy two tickets for the price of one! http://www.barbican.org.uk/free_b

That's it from your favourite Frockneys. Drop by over the weekend. We are here from 11.30 til 19.30 every day. We'd love to see your little faces.

I bet Testino thought he had struck gold when he photographed these two

But can you imagine the joy that Alex Warren Hall felt when she photgraphed these two

Yep our Frockney Rebel models Caroline & Harry are definitely not camera shy. Kate and Will take note. Big time.
So hello to everybody who has managed to take a look at our new shop Frockney Rebel or to sign up to our facebook page. We are really excited about our new venture and after a crazy Christmas spent with friends making the shop (special thanks to sexy peeps Ed, Alex, Nav, Matt, Ben & Bart). Everything, eventually ran smoothly (bar a few tears and one broken collar bone). We are now open and have already had some bloody lovely customers.
Blogging is kind of a new thing for us so we will try not to bore (too ofter anyway).  Starting from the next blog we will also try hard not to use the words  “awful,” “lazy” and “depressing” as according to a University of Colorado study bloggers who use these words tend to be 'neurotic types'. We will instead probably use words like "drunk", "hangover" and "hanging".

A few things we're excited about . . .

Swedish Fillipa K's Grape coloured Willa Stud Booties. Anything swedish we love (especially the 50p hotdogs in Ikea)

Museum of London's exhibition 'Street Photography'  18 February – 4 September 2011, FREE entry (that's the best part)
These prints by Bob Collins are on sale at the museum.
